How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without a Major Renovation

Making a home more energy efficient sounds like it should involve solar panels, new windows, major insulation work, or an entirely new heating and cooling system.
Those upgrades can matter, but they aren’t the only options.
Many homes have smaller sources of wasted energy that can be addressed without opening walls or starting a large renovation. The savings from an individual change may be modest, but several improvements working together can make the house more efficient and comfortable.
Find the Drafts First
Air leaks can make heating and cooling more difficult.
Check around exterior doors and windows for noticeable drafts. Weatherstripping can deteriorate over time, and gaps around doors may allow conditioned air to escape.
Caulk can sometimes be used around appropriate stationary gaps, while door sweeps can reduce airflow beneath exterior doors.
The goal isn’t to seal a house blindly—homes need appropriate ventilation—but obvious unwanted gaps are worth investigating.
Pay Attention to the Thermostat
Heating and cooling can account for a substantial portion of household energy use, so thermostat habits matter.
There’s little benefit in maintaining exactly the same temperature when everyone is away for hours if your household and HVAC system allow a more efficient schedule.
Programmable and smart thermostats can automate temperature changes. Some connected models also provide usage information that makes patterns easier to see.
You don’t need a smart thermostat to make adjustments, though. Consistent manual settings can work too.
Use Curtains and Blinds Strategically
Windows can affect indoor temperature in both winter and summer.
On hot sunny days, closing blinds or curtains on windows receiving strong direct sunlight can reduce some unwanted heat gain. During cooler weather, sunlight may provide useful warmth during the day.
At night, appropriate window coverings can provide another barrier between the room and a cold window.
This costs little if the window treatments are already there.
Look at Your Lighting
If your home still has frequently used incandescent bulbs, switching appropriate fixtures to LEDs can reduce electricity used for lighting.
LED bulbs also generally last much longer, meaning fewer replacements.
Focus first on lights used for several hours each day. Replacing a rarely used closet bulb will have less effect than replacing bulbs in a kitchen or living room that remain on throughout the evening.
Stop Heating Water You Don’t Need
Hot water is another area where habits can influence energy consumption.
Shorter showers use less hot water. Washing clothes in cooler water when appropriate can reduce the energy needed for laundry. Fixing dripping hot-water faucets prevents heated water from being wasted.
If a dishwasher has an energy-saving setting that works well for your household, it may be worth using.
Small changes become more meaningful because hot water is used repeatedly throughout the week.
Make Appliances Work Efficiently
An appliance doesn’t necessarily need replacing to work more effectively.
Dirty refrigerator coils on applicable models can affect efficiency. Clogged dryer lint filters restrict airflow and should be cleaned regularly for performance and safety.
Heating and cooling equipment also needs maintenance. Filters should be checked and replaced according to the system and manufacturer guidance.
Watch for Standby Power
Many electronics continue using some electricity while waiting in standby mode.
The amount from one modern device may be small, but households can contain dozens of plugged-in electronics.
Smart plugs and switchable power strips can make it easier to disconnect groups of devices when appropriate.
There’s no need to obsessively unplug every appliance. Focus on collections of electronics that don’t need constant power.
Make Improvements in Layers
You don’t need to transform your house into a high-efficiency building overnight.
Start with inexpensive changes: lighting, thermostat schedules, weatherstripping, filters, curtains, and everyday habits.
If you later decide to make larger upgrades, you’ll already have addressed some of the easiest sources of wasted energy.
Energy efficiency is often less about one dramatic project and more about helping the systems you already have do their jobs with less waste.
